Filtration

Can be used if your product is insuluble that needs ti be seperated from a liquid reaction mixture.

Can be used in purification

Use filter paper

Crystallistation

Pour solution onto evaporation dish.

Slowly heat it. Some solvent will get evaporated and the solution will get more concentrated. Stop heating when crystals form.

Leave the reat to evaporate fully in a warm place

Chromatography

Draw line on paper

Add spots of different dye in line.

Put into solution (water and somtimes ethanol).

Put lid on so solvent doesn't evaporate.

Solvent seeps up paper carrying dye with it.

Simple distillation

Used to seperate liquid from a solution.

Solution is heated. The part of solution that has lowest boiling point evaporates.

The vapour cools and condenses.

Can be used to get pure water from sea water.

Can only be used to seperate things with different boiling points.

Fractional distillation

Used if got mixture of liquids.

Stick fractional column on top of mixture. Then heat.

Different liquids have different bp's so will evaporate at different temperatures.

Liquid with lowest boiling point evaporates first. When temperature matches the boiling point of the liquid it will reach the top of the column.

Liquids with higher bps will also evaporate but wint rwach the top of the column so will only go like halfway up before condensimg and falling back down.
