What are the two types of properties?
1. Chemical: involve changing the identity of a solution.
Ex. Rusting of iron
2. Physical: changes that retain the identity of a substance.
Ex. Color, Texture, Melting.
What are the 5 stages to the Scientific Meathod?
1 Observation(a fact is observed)
2 Hypothesis(a tentative explanation of the observation)
3 Experimentation(Tests to establish validity of hypothesis)
4 theory(a general stament(s) that provide an explanation of #1)
5 Law(a theory that stands the test of time and remain unchallenged)
What is Specific Heat?
The amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of a 1gram sample of a given substance by 1 degree Celsius.
What is Energy and the types of energy?
Energy is the ability to do work
1 Kinetic-->due to motion
2 Potential-->due to position
3 Chemical-->due to chemical bonds
4 Thermal-->due to the random motion of particles
5 electrical-->due to a potential difference
6 Nuclear, wind, solar, geothermal etc...
How are exact numbers obtained?
Exact numbers are obtained by counting or come from a definition.
Ex. 1ft=12in
Ex there are 67 students in the classroom.
How are inexact Numbers obtained?
Inexact numbers are obtained from measurement. Digits that are reported in the measurement are known with certainty except the last digit.
Significant figures.
All Digits reported in a measurement are significant except:
1 Zeros to the left at the first nonzero digit. Ex 0.00000243 has 3 sig figs.
2 Zeros to the right of the last nonzero digit in a wole number
Ex. 243000 has 3 sig figs
*the zeros in this Ex can become significant if there is a bar above them or a decimal after them
What number do you round to for the Significant Figures when
(a) you multiply or divide
(b) you add or subtract
(a)The final answer is reported as having as many sig figs are there are in the term with the fewest sig figs.
(b)The final answer is reported as having as many as sig figs after the decimal as there are in the term with the fewest digits after the decimal.
What is the difference of Kalvin and Celsius?
273.15
*Temp(k)=Temp(c)+273.15
*Temp(c)=Temp(k)-273.15
What is the equation to turn (a)farenheit into Celsius
(b)Celsius into Farenheit
(a). (T(f)-32)(5(c) /9(f))=T(c)
(b). (T(c))(9(f) /5(c))+32= T(f)
What is the difference between a quantitative and qualitative observation?
a qualitative observation does not involve a number(Ex. the sky is blue; water is a liquid)
a quantitative observation(called a measurement) involves both a number and a unit (Ex. water boils at 100 degrees celsius; a certain chemistry book weighs 2kilograms.
What are the three states that matter can exist in?
1 Solid
2 Liquid
3 Gas
What are the methods mixtures can be separated by?
Can only be seperated by physical changes.
-Distillation
-Filtration
-Chromatography
What is the Density Formula?
Density= Mass / Volume
What is a homogenous mixture?
A solution. the substances in the mixture are unable to be seen by the naked eye.
Ex. wood, gasoline, air, wine
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
A mixture that is visible to the naked eye.
Ex. San in water, Iced tea with ice cubes.
