What is Chemistry?
Chemistry is the science that seeks to understand what matter does by studying what atoms and molecules do.
The Scientific Method
A process for trying to understand nature by observing nature and the way it behaves, and by conducting experiments to test our ideas.
What are the key Characteristics of the Scientific Method ?
Observation, formulation of Hypotheses, Experimentation and formulation of Laws and Theories.
What is Observation?
A way of acquiring information about nature.
eg - The soda is a liquid, brown a sweet. Or, A 240 mL serving of soda contains 27 g of sugar. |
What is Hypotheses
A tentative interpretation or explanation of your observations.
eg - the sweet taste of soda is due to the presence of sugar. A good hypothesis is one that is falsifiable. |
What are Experiments?
Tests of hypotheses, laws or theories
What are Laws?
Summary of observations that combines all past observations into one general statement.
Allows you to predict future observations |
What are Theories?
General explanation for the characteristics and behavior of nature.
