Derive the Radial Distribution function
integrate the psi function over all polar angles for given r
you get r^2*R(r)^2*dr |
What is different between radial distribution probability function and regular probability function?
regular probability = probability of electron at any location around nucleus -> tends to maximum at nucleus for 1s
radial distribution probability function = probability of electron at some distance from nucleus -> tends to zero at nucleus for 1s |
What are the 4 general statements derived from the radial distribution probability function? (give a physical reason for each)
1. given l, increase in n increases average r
2. given n, increase in l decreases average r 3. As r->0, wavefunction goes to zero for all orbitals except s orbitals 4. Orbital has l angular nodes, n-l-1 radial nodes (between r=0 and r=infinity). this gives us n-1 modes |
