What are the basic characteristics of living organisms? |
MRS GREN: Movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, nutrition. |
Explain "movement" |
An action by an organism or part of an organism causing a change of position or place. Most single-celled creatures & animals move as a whole. Fungi & plants may make movements with parts of their bodies. |
Explain "respiration" |
The chemical reactions in cells that break down nutrient molecules & release energy for metabolism. Most organisms need oxygen for this. |
Explain "sensitivity" |
The ability to detec or sense stimuli in the internal or external environment & to make an appropriate response. |
Explain "growth" |
A permanent increase in size and dry mass by an increase in cell number or cell size, or both. Multi-cellular organisms increase the numbers of cells in their bodies, can become more complicated & change their shape as well as increasing in size. |
Explain "reproduction" |
The process that makes more of the same organism. Single-celled organisms & bacteria simply keep dividing in two. Multicellular plants & animals may reproduce sexually or asexually. |
Explain "excretion" |
The removal of the waste products or metabolism (chemical reactions in the cells, including respiration), toxic materials & substances in excess of requirements. Respiration & other chemical changes in the cells produce waste products such as CO2. |
Explain "nutrition" |
The taking in of materials for energy, growth & development. |
What is a single-celled creature? |
A living thing that is just one cell. |
What is a multi-cellular creature? |
A living thing that consists of many cells. |
What are the advantages of being multicellular? |
The organism can be larger, the organism can be more complex & cell differentiation. |
What is cell differentiation? |
To have or having different types of cells with different functions. |
What is a species? |
A species is a group of organisms that can reproduce to produce fertile offspring |
What are some common traits of species? |
Members of a species often resemble each other very closely in appearance. Species are almost identical in their anatomy, physiology & behavior |
What is a genus? |
A genus is a group of closely related species (plural genera) |
