Rhythm
Arrangement of durations in a particular melody or some other musical passage.
Beats
Basic unit of measurement for time in music
Accent
strong beats versus weak beats. In order to organize time
Meter (4)
1. Any recurring patterns of accented beats.
2. Each occurrence of this repeated pattern is called a measure. Measures are indicated by vertical lines called bar lines.
3. Simple meters - the basic meter count. There are two kinds: duple - one two one two. triple - one two three one two three
4. Compound meter - subtypes of duple and triple meter
Rhythm and Meter (2)
Meter is the background and rhythm is the foreground.
Syncopation - A beat on the off beat
Tempo (2)
1. Speed of music.
2. Counted by metronome marks.
Common Tempo Indications (6)
Adagio = slow
Andante = on the slow side, but not too slow
Moderato = moderate tempo
Allegretto = on the fast side, but not too fast
Allegro = fast
Presto = very fast
Other tempo changes
accelerando = gradually getter faster
ritardando = gradually getting slower
piu lento, liu allegro = slower, faster
fermata symbol = a hold of indefinite length on a certain note or rest
a tempo = back to the main tempo
Scale
Pitches assembled in a collection
Interval
Difference between any two pitches is called an interval
Octave
Interval where the sound of the pitch seems the same but higher. The ratio of frequency being 1:2
Diatonic Scale
Going up the scale one letter at a time
Chromatic scale
Going up 1 half-step at a time
Steps
1. Half-step = smallest interval. two successive notes of the chromatic scale
2. Whole step = equal to two half steps.
