Calvinism

Religion based on work of John Calvin. God was all good, humans were all corrupt. Includes predestination & conversion. Doctrines of this religion swept into England as Henry VIII broke away from Roman Catholic Church.

Pre-Destination

Since creation of your soul, God has already decided whether you will go to heaven or hell. (Calvinism)

Conversion

Intense religious experience where God reveals the fate of your soul. Thereafter, you must live sanctified life. (Calvinism)

Puritans

After Henry VIII broke from RCC, group of people looked for total purification of Chrisitanity. Unhappy with slow progress of Protestant Reformation & wanted Church of England to be de-catholicized.

Seperationists

Tiny group of devout Puritans who vowed to break away entirely from Church of England. King James I persecuted them & pushed them out of England.

Mayflower Compact

Simple agreement signed on Mayflower during voyage to form a crude government and to submit to the will of the majority under the regulations agreed upon.

Massachusetts Bay Colony

Non-extreme Puritans, fearful of Charles I, secured charter to establish this colony with 11 vessels in 1630.

Great English Migration

1630's, 70,000 left England for New World. 20,000 to MA.

Navigation Laws

Laws that would attempt to bring more money toEngland and to regulate trade for the colonies only with England. The laws wereeasily corrupted and avoided.

Patroonships

Vast feudal estates fronted Hudson River grantedto Dutch who promised to settle fifty people on that land.

Quakers

1640s, George Fox in England, if people arecreated in the image of God, all are equal, wanted to change Christianity,thrown in jail. No leaders in Quakers, they question all leadership. In 1652,Quakers escaped to colonies for religious freedom and were burned by Puritansas witches. William Penn made his land safe haven for Quakers and other religiousgroups. Good relations with natives in PA colony due to Quaker tolerance forall.

Blue Laws

Laws formed by Quakers to prohibit theater,dice, games, and excessive hilarity.

Anne Hutchinson

Intelligent, talkative, strong willed, mother of 14,spoke out against Puritanism and predestination. Banished from MA colony andwent to NY where she was later killed by local Indians.

Roger Williams

Radical Seperationist Salem minister. Spokeabout cleansing Church of England and how Indians were not fairly compensatedfor the MA colony taking their land. He denied government the ability toregulate religion. Fled to Rhode Island in 1636 and built first Baptist churchwith complete freedom of religion, no taxes were to fund church, and hesheltered abused Quakers. Made Rhode Island known for tolerance and opportunity.

Massasoit

Wampanoag Chieftan signed treaty withSeperationist Pilgrims in 1621 and helped them live and had the firstThanksgiving with them a year later.

Metacom (King Philip)

Massasoit’s son made alliances with tribes andattacked English 1675. A year later, the war was ended and Metacom was beheadedand his family was sold into slavery.

Charles II

Dies in 1685, his Catholic brother James II succeeds

Sir Edmund Andros

Made Governor of the Dominion of New England byJames II. Arbitrarily taxed people, banned town meetings, made HQ in Boston to convert with the Puritans. Overthrown in 1688

William III

Dutchborn, married to Mary II, made King in 1689, bad blood with Spain.

Mary II

Protestant daughter Catholic James II, marries to William III, Queen in 1689
