Response rate

Percentage of people out of the total number available who respond to a survey

Population

Group of individuals a researcher seeks to learn about from a research study

Sample

Group of individuals chosen from the population to represent it in a research study

Sampling error

The difference between the observations in a population and in the sample that represents the population in a study

Occurs in all research because the sample will never give you the same observations of the entire population

Probability sample

Sample chosen such that individuals are chosen with a specific probability

Individuals have a specific probability of being chosen from the population

So it is the most likely to represent the population

Convenience / purposive sample

Sample chosen such that the probability of an individual being chosen cannot be determined

Types of probability samples

Simple random sample cluster sample stratified random sample

Simple random sample

Sample chosen randomly from the population such that each individual has an equal chance of being selected

Ex: students are chosen randomly from you list of all students at a university

Cluster sample

Clusters of individuals are identified and then a subset of clusters is randomly chosen to sample from

Ex: getting a sample of college students by first choosing 25 colleges then choosing students from each of those colleges

Or

Getting a sample of doctors by first using a certain amount of hospitals then choosing doctors from those hospitals

Stratified random sample

Members of a population are randomly selected such that the proportion of a group in the sample is equal to the proportion of the group in the population using random sampling

Ex: getting a sample of registered voters by first randomly selecting a list of Democrats and Republicans that are equal to the portion of Democrats and Republicans in the US

40% of Americans are republicans so ensure that 40% of your samle is Republican

Volunteer sample

Sample chosen from the population such that available individuals are chosen based on who volunteers to purchase

Quota sample

Sample chosen from the population such that available individuals are chosen with equivalent proportions of individuals for a specific characteristic in the population and Sample

But no random selection since using available individuals

Ex:

Internet sample

Sample chosen from the population by recruiting on the internet
