endrogenous circannual rhythm

a roughly 24 hour cycle in the physiological processes of living beings, marked by an internal clock of sorts

suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN)

a part of the hypothalamus, located just above the optic chiasm, that provides the main control of the circadian rhythms for sleep and body temperature

pineal gland

an endocrine gland located just posterior to the thalamus, that releases the hormone melatonin

melatonin

a hormone that influences both the circadian rhythm and the circannual rhythm, and is released at night, usually spiking about two or threeh ours before bedtime, making us sleepy
