Describe what the Supreme Court's role in the Judicial Branch is and how they choose cases.

Role: to determine if the citizen's right has been violated in a case.


Choosing a case... They recieve a 'writ of certiorari' or a request from a lower court to hear the case. Then they decide which cases need to be checked for a Constitutional issue. Also, they have the cases that are not appealed, but come directly to the Supreme Court(are the ones that include disputes(major) and diplomats with other countries.)

Explain the steps in the trial process and name and describe the key people involved in a trial.

Steps: First, the opening statements by the 'lawyers'. The 'witnesses' are then asked questions by the 'lawyers'. The cross examination by the 'lawyers' comes next. The 'jury' then has to discuss the case and make a decision. Finally, the'judge' has to make the sentencing.

Explain the difference between a criminal and civil case and GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF EACH.

Criminal- an action that may harm a person or society and may break a law (ex.murder)


Civil- disputes between people and/or organizations (ex.breaking a contract)
