Name the 3 types of joints
Fibrous, cartilaginous & synovial
What type of joint is least mobile?
Fibrous
Name 2 examples of Fibrous joints.
Suture, Syndesmosis or gomphosis
What type of joint is somewhat movable, but can't move freely?
Cartilaginous
Name an example of a cartilaginous joint.
Synchondrosis (hyaline cartilage) or Symphysis (fibrocartilage)
What type of joint is free moving?
Synovial
What makes up a synovial joint?
It is a capsule filled with synovial fluid around a joint. Also has Hyaline cartilage on bones.
Name the 6 types of Synovial joints.
Plane, Ball and socket, Hinge, pivot, condyloid and saddle.
How many layers does an articualr capsule of a synovial joint have? and what are they made of?
2 layers. Fiberous capsule- made of dense irregular connective tissue (continuous with periosteum). Synovial membrane-inner layer of loose connective tissue, secretes synovial fluid.
What does synovial fluid do?
It acts as a lubricant of the joint, it fills the cavity and bears some of the weight and nourishes and protects the cartilage.
What are ligaments?
Dense regular connective tissue that connects bone to bone. They reinforce joints.
How many menisci does each knee have?
2. Later and medail menisci. They also have fat pads.
What is arthritis?
The inflammation or degeneration of joints.
What are the 2 types of arthritis?
Acute- short, predictable cycles, usually due to infection.
Chronic- long lasting, often from wear and tear. |
What are some of the causes of Chronic Arthritis?
Wear and tear of joints, degeneration of articular cartilage, or exposed bones can thincken and form bony spurs.
What is Rheumatoid Arthritis? and what kind of arthritis is it? (acute or chronic)
Chronic. Its a chronic inflammatory disorder (an autoimmune disease). There is no cure.
What happens to the joint in rheumatoid arthritis?
inflammation in the joint causes fluid to accumulate and pain is caused by the pressure.Over time granulation tissue (pannus) and scarring replace the joint tissue. This causes a loss of function.
What is Gouty arthritis?
Uric acid is produced too much or the person is unable to eliminate it properly and crystals form. They deposit in soft tissues and cause pain and swelling.
WHo does gouty arthritis usually affect most?
Middle aged Men
Who does Rheumatoid arthritis mostly affect?
Women 30-40
