Steps to Independence
1775 America and Britain at war. Patriots wanted indepence.Loyalist wanted King George to rule. Others stayed neutral and took no side.
Declaration of Indepence
Congress asked Thomas Jefferson & others to write. He said people have right to live,be free,seek happiness. Gov. should protect rights or people have right to form new gov. Colonies should seperate from Britain
Importance of Declaration
July 4, 1776 Congress accepted the Declaration. Delegates knew of dangers of treason but signed. Important because it says America believes in equal rights for all. Today that includes all but then only white men who owned property had right to vote.
Taking Sides
Not everyone thought it was a good idea to declare Independence. 1/2 were Patriots, 1/5 Loyalist, others neutral. Loyalist include those who worked for British Gov.,wealthy buisness owners, some enslaved African Americans who were offered freedom. More Am. Indians helped British to keep Patriots from taking land.
Challanges of War
war created many problems. people had to leave homes, farms destroyed, prices went up on goods
Washington's First Battles
George Washington was a great leader. Spring 1776 forced British out of Boston. Planned attack on Trenton. On 12/25/76 suprised soldiers tired from celebrating Christmas. Won battle and took almost 1000 prisoners. Patriots very happy with victory.
Turning Point
British march from Canada to NY battle at Saratoga. Hard but Americans won. France helps America sends money, soldiers and a navy. Later Spain,Netherlands and Russia
helps.At Valley Forge Friedrich Von Steuben a german soldier joined up with army and trained Americans to march together and use their weapons.
War in the South and West
British invaded south as new strategy and won GA, SC. British won may battles but Patriots fought back causing them to get tired and use up supplies.
The War Ends
Patriots fought last battle against British in Yorktown, VA. French ships helped. War cont. 2 more years but not much fighting. In Sept. 1783 Treaty of Paris signed. Said America Independent.
Thomas Paine
Wrote Common Sense Pamplet in Jan. 1776. Stated: British treated colonies unfairly and only way to stop was to become independent. 100,000 copies sold. cheap and easy to read
Patrick Henry
A Patriot from VA. "Give me Liberty of give me death" GAve bold speeches that moved colonist toward independence.
Thomas Jefferson
1768 designs Monticello(landmark), 1776 writes declaration,1800 elected President, 1803 Lousiana Purchase-doubles size of US,1804 sends Lewis and Clark to explore West.
