Define photoautotroph

Makes food for themselves using light ex. Plants, algae

Define heterotrophs

Rely on other organisms for energy ex. Animals def

Define chemoautotroph

Make their own food without sunlight ex.organisms on bottom of ocean

Formula for photosynthesis

6CO2+6H2O--(light)-->C6H12O6+6O2

Which cells in plants do photosynthesis and where it's located

Mesophyll: middle layer of cell in the leaves

How O2 and CO2 are exchanged in plants. What cells are responsible for it.

•exchanged through the Stomata (opening on bottom of leave)

•guard cell control is stomata is open or close

The arrangement of the parts of chloroplast

Thylakoid:(individual disc in chloroplast)

Granum:(stacks of thylakoids)

Stroma:(fluid outside thylakoids)

Lumen: (inside thylakoids)

Some of the types of electromagnetic radiation the sun emits

Visible light, UV rays, x-rays

Know parts of wave(picture) and how energy, frequency, and wavelength are related

Frequency: # of waves that past a point in 1 second

Related: if wave length increases frequency decreases ex

Big waves low energy low frequency

Know which color of light have the most and least energy

Red is lowest Violet is highest

Roy G Biv

What is an absorption spectrum

Way to show wave length of light that pigment will absorb

Know what type of light carotenoids absorb/ reflect and what plants are they most abundant in

Absorb: V,I,B,G Reflect: Y,O,R

Ex. Corn, carrot, tomatoes

Know what type of light chlorophylls absorb/ reflect and what plants most abundant

Absorbs most colors other than green

Reflect green

Ex. Green beans, broccoli

Know the basic function of the two parts of photosynthesis and where they occur.

Light Dependent Reaction

•to take light energy and convert it into ATP&NADPH for light independent part(step 2)

•happens across the membrane of the thylakoids

Know the parts of a photosystem(ps) and what it's function is

•2 proteins: where the pigment are stored (1 on each side)

•reaction center in the middle

•function: PS2 pigments absorb light energy and transfer it to the reaction center where it excites an electron and splits an H2O PS1 reexcites the electrons

Produced by the light dependent reaction

ATP&NADPH

Where Light dependent reaction happens

Stroma

Starting reactants of the Calvin cycle/ light independent

3CO2 and 3 RuBP

How many CO2 are required for one cycle of the Calvin cycle

3

Know the three phases of the Calvin cycle be able to describe what happens at each step

1) carbon fixation: takes CO2+RuBP-->6C splits to 2 3C

2) reduction: the 3C molecule from step 1 gets reduced by gaining electron and becomes G3P 1 G3P is released to make glucose

3)regeneration: the 5 G3P are made to remake 3 RuBP

How much energy is consumed for one Calvin cycle and at which steps

Step 2:2 ATP and 2 NADPH for each carbon (6 for cycle )

Step 3: 3 ATP

=9 ATP

How much energy is consumed for one Calvin cycle and at which steps

Step 2:2 ATP and 2 NADPH for each carbon (6 for cycle )

Step 3: 3 ATP

=9 ATP

What are the final products of one Calvin cycle

3 RuBP and 1 G3P= 1/2 glucose

How much energy is consumed for one Calvin cycle and at which steps

Step 2:2 ATP and 2 NADPH for each carbon (6 for cycle )

Step 3: 3 ATP

=9 ATP

What are the final products of one Calvin cycle

3 RuBP and 1 G3P= 1/2 glucose

How many Calvin cycles must occur to make 1 glucose
