What are the classifications of Placenta Previa?
Low Lying - relationship between the placenta & the cervical os is unknown
Marginal - edge of the placenta is within 2-3 cm of the cervical os
Partial - placenta covers part of the internal os
Complete - placenta covers all of the internal os
What are the findings associated with placenta previa?
Painless bright red bleeding usually occuring in the 2nd or 3rd trimester.
How is placenta previa diagnosed?
With a transvaginal ultrasound.
What are the nursing interventions related to Placenta Previa?
No vaginal exams
Symptomatic Tx: IV access w/ lab work (specifically H&H to determine if she is anemic or not or issues with clotting) & Bedrest w/ bathroom privileges
Explain, Inform & Reassure
Notification of the physician
What type of delivery occurs in placenta previa cases?
Cesarean. In a vaginal delivery she would likely deliver the placenta first.
What is the medical management of placenta previa?
Depends on the status of the woman and her bleeding; however, in general - bed rest, hydration, blood work to determine if the clotting cascade has begun.
If a woman with placenta previa is bleeding excessively, how do you determine output?
Weigh the chucks. 1 g of excess weight of chuck = 1 ml of blood loss.
