Romans 7.21

So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.

What fact about this verse must I realize and accept?

p. 59

We are in a lifelong struggle with sin. We will be better equipped to deal with sin if we understand the reality of the struggle.

Refer to Romans 7.21 again, describe the contrasting difference between believers and unbelievers who commit the same sin.

p. 59

The believer struggles with the sin because God has enabled him to see it in himself.

The unbeliever who commits the same sin lies serenely content in his darkness.

Scripture indicates that the seat of indwelling sin resides within in the heart of man (Mk 7.21-23)

What is a description of the heart of man?

p. 60-61

The heart symbolizes the whole soul of a man and all of its faculties working together in doing good or evil. It includes the mind as it reasons, discerns, and judges; the affections and emotions as they like or dislike; the conscience as it determines and warns; and the will as it chooses or refuses.

Jeremiah 17.9

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?

In what ways is the heart deceitful?

p. 61

1. It excuses, rationalizes, and justifies our actions.

2. It blinds us to entire areas of sin.

3. It causes us to deal with sin using only halfway measures.

4. It causes us to think that mental assent to the Word of God is the same as obedience.

Dealing with this unsearchable heart of deceit in your own life requires a work of God. What prayer should you pray?

p. 61

Psalm 139.23-24

23 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Psalm 139.23 asks God to "search my heart". We must let Him do it or we might fall into traps.

What two pitfalls await if we try to do the searching ourselves?

p. 62

1. Morbid introspection: Satan could use this as a tool of discouragement.

2. Missing the real issues: recall that our minds are blinded, so we might settle for dealing with secondary issues.

The will is our chooser. Which faculty of man (reason or desire) has the strongest influence on the will of a man?

p. 62-63

Indwelling sin works largely through desires.

Ever since the Fall, the will of a man has listened to evil desires more than reason.

James 1.14

But each person is tempted when he is dragged away by his own evil desire and enticed.

Explain temptations we search out

p. 63

If we are to win the battle for holiness, we must recognize that the basic problem lies within us.

Rather than only outward temptations, it is our evil desires that search out temptations to satisfy their insatiable lusts.

Temptations are not sought out, but what happens when they are presented to the inner man?

p.64

Just as fire burns any combustible material presented to it, so our own evil desires are immediately ready to receive and embrace the temptation presented to us.

John Owen said that sin carries on its war by entangling our desires and are drawing them away. How does this relate to choosing to deny sin?

p. 64

Denying sin must be chiefly directed at our desires by denying self and not satisfying the lusts of our bodies.

Indwelling sin tends to deceive our reasoning. This is Satan's greatest strategy to deceive our minds. How can we prevent this?

p.64

A Christian's reasoning is enlightened by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God... choosing to obey the Word stands in the way of sin gaining mastery over us through our desires.

Deceit of the mind is carried on by degrees, little by little. The 1st degree is a "lack of watchfulness". What does this mean?

p. 64-65

We are drawn away from watchfulness by overconfidence by thinking I'm beyond that temptation. We look at someone else's failure and say "I would never do that". But be careful if you stand ... but careful lest you fall. (1Cor 10.12)

The 2nd degree of deceit of the mind is a "lack of obedience" (or abusing grace). What does this mean?

p. 65

Sometimes we abuse grace when we think we can knowingly sin and then receive forgiveness by claiming 1John 1.9. This is a focus on God's compassion and grace to the exclusion of His holiness and hatred of sin.

Although sin does not have dominion over us, there is still a battle with indwelling sin. What is the best way to fight against this?

p. 65

Our recourse against the warfare of indwelling sin is to deal swiftly and firmly with the first motions of sin. If temptation finds any lodging place within the soul, it will be used to lead us into sin.

Why must we never consider that our fight against sin is at an end?

Prov 4.23 ... Guard your hearts above all else.

1. The heart is unsearchable

2. Our evil desires are insatiable

3. Reason is constantly in danger of deceit.
