Mercenaries

Battle of Saratoga

1. Definition: The Americans that remained loyal to Britain and opposed the war for independence.


2. There was a lot of flip flopping of colonists from supporting one side or the other because they supported whichever army was closer to winning.


3. The part of the colonies that these people were strongest was in the Carolinas and Georgia or in the south.


4. I think the most support from these people was in the Carolinas and Georgia because Britain hadn't done much to these people.


5. People did this because they were members of the Anglican Church, they depended on Great Britain for their job, some feared the disorder that might break out from challenging the established government, and some didn't understand what all the commotion was about.

Loyalists

1. Definition: to enlist soldiers in the army.


2. The typical enlistment period for these people was one year.


3. George Washington wanted a longer enlistment period because many soldiers would serve for one year and then quit.


4. It was difficult for theContinental Army to recruit officers because many of the officers were veterans of previous wars or they were young men who recruited from the ranks.

Recruit

2. The reasons that this man was slowed in making his way to Albany, NY was that he traveled with 30 wagons of luxury goods which slowed them down and the Americans also knocked trees down to slow them down.
