Cumulus clouds |
Dense white clouds with fluffy tops and flat bottoms |
Small clouds usually mean fair weather |
Stratus clouds |
Flat layered clouds |
High thin clouds mean cloudy dry weather low heavy clouds mean by train |
Cirrus clouds |
High, thin, and wispy clouds |
These clouds always mean fair weather |
Cumulonimbus clouds |
Heavy grey clouds |
These clouds mean weather with precipitation very tall clouds can mean thunderstorms |
Fog |
Ground level water vapor that has cooled in the air, like ground level clouds |
How Clouds Form |
Liquid water evaporates it forms water vapor in the air. When the water vapor in the air cools it condenses into tiny droplets |
Anemometer |
A device that measures wind speed |
Barometer |
A device that is used to measure air pressure |
Thermometer |
A device that is used to measure air temperature |
Rain gauge |
A device used to measure the depth of precipitation that has fallen |
Wind vane |
A device used to show the direction from which the wind is blowing |
Evaporation |
Liquid water changes to water vapor or a gas because of heat from the Sun. |
Condensation |
Water vapor in air cools and changes to tiny droplets of liquid water. Clouds are made of these tiny droplets. |
Precipitation |
As more water vapor condenses, the droplets in clouds become large and heavy. These drops of water fall to the ground. |
Runoff |
Precipitation that does not soak into the ground flows downhill into streams and rivers. |
Climate |
The the average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time |
Weather |
The condition of the atmosphere at a certain place and time |
