Marbury vs. Madison (1803)
Marbury was appointed at the end of Adam's presidency, however the papers were not delivered in time, therefore, Jefferson told Madison not to deliver them.
Marbury petitioned the supreme court for his papers but Marbury was denied his commission.
Judiciary Act of 1801
Adams's way to keep the federalist party alive under a democratic republican leader.
Before his presidency ended he appointed many new federalist men to the supreme court to continue federalism.
War of 1812
Issues of trade, territory, and impressment with the Native American and the British led to this war.
Impressment
Forced "recruitment" of sailors into the British Navy.
These included Americans, kidnapped from American ships and coastal cities and forced to serve aboard British ships.
Cause a lot of tension between England and America.
Treaty of Ghent
Signed in 1814 and set an armistice to stop the fighting.
-limited amount of war ships in the Great Lakes.
-reopened trade
-reaffirmed American independence and nationalism
Louisiana Purchase (1803)
The territory purchases by the US from France for $15 million.
If we didn't purchase this territory and France kept it, it would increase French power in the US.
This purchase double US territory.
