Dermis

Has 2 zones (papillary and reticular) that hold the fingerprints, blood vessels, sweat and oil glands, hair follicles, pressure receptors and phagocytes

Hypodermis

Holds adipose tissue, anchors skin to the muscle, shock absorber and insulator

Hair

Dead cells keratinized, grows from hair follicle, three layers of hair that determine texture, color due to melanocytes

Nails

Keratinized dead cells, growth occurs from the white "half moon" shape, protects ends of fingers, defense, scratching

Sweat gland

2 types- apocrine and eccrine

Sebaceous gland

Open into hair follicles, secrete oily mix of fat and dead cells called sebum

Makes melanin which is a dark pigment that gives your skin its color

Sebum

An oily mix of fat and dead cells

Papillary layer

Uneven and has fingerlike projections called dermal papillae (fingerprints)

Mammary gland

Secretes milk in female mammals

Ceruminous gland

Secretes earwax in the ears, traps dust and germs

Eccrine gland

Contains sweat producing cells, found all over the body, used to lower body temperature

Apocrine gland

Activated at puberty, found mostly in armpits and groin, connect to hair follicles
