Physical change

A change which does not alter the chemical composition of a substance

Chemical change

A change that alters the chemical composition of a substance

Phase Changes and What They’re Called

Phase changes are changes between the three phases: solid, liquid, and gas.

Solid to liquid - melting

Liquid to gas - vaporizing

Gas to liquid - condensing

Liquid to solid - freezing

Sublimation is when a phase change skips a step.

Kinetic Theory of Matter

The molecules (or atoms) that make up a substance have space in between them, and are in constant random motion. The hotter the substance, the faster the motion.

Formation reaction

A reaction in which two or more elements react together to form a single compound

Decomposition reaction

A reaction in which the only reactant is a compound, and the products are the elements from which the compound is made

Single displacement reaction

A reaction in which one element or ion in a compound is replaced by a different element or ion

Double displacement reaction

A reaction in which two elements or ions in two different compounds switch places, each becoming part of the other compound

Combustion reaction

The process by which a chemical reacts with oxygen to form one or more products as well as heat and usually light

Complete combustion

A combustion reaction in which the only products are carbon dioxide and water

Incomplete combustion

A combustion reaction in which carbon monoxide and/or elemental carbon are formed in addition to water

Temperature conversions

Degrees F = 9/5 (degrees C) + 32

Degrees C = 5/9 (degrees F - 32)

Phase symbols

(s) = solid

(l) = liquid

(g) = gas

(aq) = aqueous(dissolved in water)
