Accessibility

A governing principle of multimedia design that focuses on people with disabilities and their right of access to content on a digital device or multimedia page.

Accordion

A special type of menu constructed with a vertically or horizontally stacked list of sections that expand or collapse when selected.

Archive

A searchable collection of digital records organized by descriptive categories or fields.

Breadcrumb

A navigational feature that allows users to keep track of their path as they move around within a database or complex series of layers or pages.

Carousel

An UI design that arranges items along a horizontal line. Only a few times are visible to the user at a time. Additional items are revealed by scrolling to the left or right; resulting in the carousel-like movement of icons or thumbnails across the screen.

Checkbox

A data input component that lets users select multiple options from a list of choices.

Clickstream

A data mining technique used for recording a user's actions as he or she navigates a web page or application interface.

Collaborative Filtering

A set of techniques for presenting users with personalized information that's based on aggregate data collected from other users.

Cosmetic Customization

A set of features that allow the user to personalize the visual presentation of an interface without affecting its function (e.g. -- creating personal avatars on the Wii.)

Data Mining

Various techniques used for recording, collecting or soliciting user information or actions.

Dropdown List

A user interface component that prompts users to select from a list of mutually exclusive options displayed vertically from top to bottom.

Dropdown Menu

A type of menu, that when activated, expands vertically and/or horizontally to reveal a list of selectable subsections.

Fat Footer

A vertically expanded footer at the bottom of the page containing additional internal and external links.

Folksonomy

Or collaborative content tagging. A method of organizing content using tag clouds. Tag clouds are formed by computer systems using aggregate data gathered from user-generated tags of online content. Popular with social bookmarking websites and photo/video sharing sites.

Footer

A content region located at the bottom of the page containing metadata and/or general information of lesser importance (company/author name, webmaster contact, copyright, webmaster contact, legal information and policies such as terms of uses, disclaimers, etc.)

Form

A UI component designed to collect information from the user via direct input. A form can contain numerous types of input elements such as text fields, checkboxes, radio buttons and submit buttons. Each input element on a form is used to collect a single a single piece of information (first name, last name, age, gender, etc.)



Functional Customization

A set of features that allow the user to change the functionality of an interface.

Home Link

A visible link or button that, when activated, takes the user to the home page or startup screen of a website or device application.

Input Prompt

A feature whereby the browser or program automatically prefills a text field with a prompt, providing the user with an example of what to type.

Interactivity

The reciprocal communication between the media and the user facilitated by various technology features; in other words, it's the user and the media communicating with one another.

Media Stickiness

The ability to retain users to a multimedia site or technology platform.

Menu

A user interface component that provides users with a list of choices through the presentation of onscreen visual prompts.

Motion Tracking Interface

A type of graphical user interface that directly monitors and responds to users' body movements.

Navigation

A system of features and components that provide structure and organization to a multimedia experience or user interface.

Pagination

A UI component that allows users to easily navigate through the parts of a large body of information that is logically broken up into subsections or pages.

Personalization

Computerized attempts to customize.

Radio Button

A date input component that lets users choose one option from a list of mutually exclusive options.

Tab Menu

A menu system similar to labeling folders and organizing them in a file cabinet. Virtual tabs give users access to different content modules or sections within a multimedia site or database.

Tag/Tag Cloud

A tag is short descriptive word or phrase used to describe the contents of a digital asset such as a blog post, photo, video or audio file. A tag cloud is visual representation of the tags associated with a specific archive or collection of digital material. The popularity of tags in a tag cloud is indicated visually-- often by varying the font color and size.

Tailoring

Any technique or feature that allows an interface to be adapted to the needs or preferences of an individual user, giving them a tailored experience.

Text Field

An input component used on forms to collect text-based information (name, address, etc.)

Thumbnail

A reduced-size version of a larger image used to illustrate any visual item, such a a picture, a frame from a video clip, or a screenshot of a web page.

Touch User Interface

Or touch interface. A UI that allows the user to directly interact with what is displayed on screen by using one or more fingers (such as on an iPhone or tablet device.)

Usability

A measure of the extent to which users of an interface can achieve their context-specific goals effectively, efficiently and with satisfaction.

Usability Testing

Systematic methods of evaluating and refining an interface or product, usually prior to its release, to ensure that it meets industry standard usability criteria.

User Interface (UI)

Any system of physical and/or virtual controls designed to allow users to interact with a digital application or device.

User-Centered Design (UCD)

The thoughtful and deliberate process of creating an interface to meet the needs of real users.

Web User Interface (WUI)

Considered one of the most widely used graphical user interfaces, WUIs allow users to interact with content presented in the form of Web pages; usually through the use of a Web browser.
