population ecology |
study of populations in relation to their environments |
population |
group of individuals of single species living in the same general area |
density |
number of individuals per unit of area or volume |
dispersion |
pattern of spacing amoung individuals within a boundry |
mark-recapture method |
a sampling technique used to estimate the size of animal populations. Ecologists mark an animal and allow it to live in it's habitat for a set period. The ecologist will then capture a portion of the population and count the number of marked individuals. Number of marked in the sample should be in the same proportion as the number of captured individuals over the entire population. |
immigration |
influx of new individuals from other areas |
emigration |
movement of individuals out of a population and onto other locations |
territoriality |
the defense of a bounded physical space against encroachment by another individual |
demography |
the study of the vital statistics of populations and how they change overtime |
life tables |
age specific summaries of the survival patterns of a population |
cohort |
a group of individuals of the same age |
survivorship curve |
a plot of the proportion of numbers in a cohort still alive at each age |
reproductive table |
age-specific summary of the reproductive rates in a population |
