Why are the tropics warm and the poles cold?
Regions at or near the equator receive much more sunlight per unit area and thus much more energy in the form of heat-than regions that are closer to the poles.
Why are the Tropics wet?
Because of hadley cells-areas along the equator receive the most moisture, while locations 30 degrees north and south of the equator are among the driest on the planet.
What is a Hadley cell?
A major cycle in global air circulation.
Why are there seasons?
Because Earth tilts on its axis.
How do mountains and oceans effect the climate?
The presense of mountain ranges tends to produce extremes in precipitation, the presence of an ocean has a moderating influence on temperature.
How do mountain ranges create rain shadows?
When moisture-laden air rises over a mountain range, the air cools enough to condense water vapor. As a result, moisture falls to the ground as precipitation. On the other side of the mountain, little water is left to provide precipitation.
