ADA Building Code Compliance Plan
A component of the contracts documents package for a project that demonstrates barrier-free requirements according to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as part of, or addition to, the construction plan.
Adjacency Study
A relationship study that depicts the organizational and hierarchical structure of a company, as well as space requirements, operational flow, and circulation patterns. It is used to develop a plan that accommodates the functions users must carry out and indicates where these are to be accomplished.
Bid Procurement
A process of soliciting bids (usually at least 3) for work to be done; also known as request for proposals.
Bubble Diagram
A diagram that depicts overall zones, or areas od space by type of activity. it may also refer to a more detailed diagram, indicating the location and proportional sizes of areas depicted.
Certified Bath Designer (CBD)
A specialty credential indicating that a designer has achieved a level or proficiency in bath design through a combination of education and experience.
Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD)
A specialty credential indicating that a designer has achieved a level of proficiency in kitchen design through a combination of education and experience.
Change Order
An authorized change to the contract documents package.
Circulation Pattern
How people move around an interior space, including inside and outside, the direction of door swings, and the width of corridors, hallways, and stairs.
Competitive Bid Process
The process of securing several bids (usually at least 3) from competing sources that is recommended for projects that involve construction and/or demolition (also see bid procurement)
Construction Plan
A component of the contract documents package that shows walls, partitions, columns, doors, and windows.
Contract Administration Phase
The final phase of an interior design project. It involves the execution of the design plans, including oversight or work performed by tradespeople to see that they are consistent with the design concept.
Contract Documents Package
A group of documents that serves as the basis for construction and installation of a design project (e.g. Plans, schedules, and specifications); also called bid package.
Contracts Documents Phase
The fourth phase of an interior design project in which documents describing both interior construction and furnishing are prepared for the client's written approval; the designer may also assist the client with the bidding, procurement, and selection process for contracted goods and services.
Criteria Matrix
A technique for condensing and formatting many of the programming requirements of an interior design project, including square footage needs and adjacencies, when developing preliminary design schematics.
Deliverables
Floor plans and other drawings pertaining to an interior design process.
Demolition Plan
A component of the contract documents package that demonstrates existing conditions to be eliminated prior to renovations that involve construction of structural components.
Design Concept
A generalized idea or vision not only of how an interior will look but also of how it will serve the users.
Design Development Phase
The third phase of an interior design project, in which drawings and other documents are refined and executed to scale, with greater detail for client approval, and preliminary budget estimates may be revised.
Desk Audit
A review of a company's organization chart, policies, practices, and procedures.
Detail
A drawing of a specific element of a design that helps to define the design concept.
Door and Window Schedule
A component of the contract documents package that typically is presented in a format that includes the number, size, material, and hardware for interior doors and windows.
Elevation
A scale drawing that shows a vertical slice of a space; for an interior, it shows one wall with elements such as millwork on the wall surface or furniture in front of the wall.
Existing Conditions
A term used to describe the architectural features of a sight, such as its windows and doors.
FF&E (Fixtures, Furnishings, and Equipment)
An abbreviation for fixtures, furnishings, and equipment
Field Measurement (Field Survey)
A measurement or a space, including doors and windows, that is taken on-site.
Finish Plan
A component of the contract documents package that notes the surface coverings. It may include several schedules, such as a plan for all wood finishes, and another for paint finishes.
Floor Plan (Furniture Layout Plan)
A plan for how furniture and equipment should be laid out; also called furniture layout plan.
Furniture and Equipment Plan
A component of the contract documents package that consists of one or a series of floor plans that identify "movable" furnishings as well as built-in cabinetwork, fixtures and appliances, such as for kitchens and bathrooms. It may be accompanied by elevations and details to depict customized units.
Galley Kitchen
A term derived from the kitchen areas on naval ships; for residential use, to describe kitchens generally with no dining area designed to maximize limited space and minimize inefficient activity. First mass-produced for public housing after WWI in Germany, it became known as the Frankfurt Kitchen.
Great Room
A contemporary term to describe a large, open interior space that is multifunctional, such as for dining and entertaining; a derivative of the communal great hall of the medieval castles in Europe.
Lighting Plan
A component of the contract documents plan including all fixtures (e.g. portable table and floor lamps, wall scones, and dimmer and switching controls). It may be combined with a reflected ceiling plan or be a separate plan.
Performance Specifications
Expectations for products, such as how well they will perform (or last) under specific conditions.
Perspective Drawing
A drawing that adds volume or three-dimensionality to the concept for the design of an interior space. Interior designers typically produce one- or two- point perspective drawings.
Plan
In the contract documents package, any of several types of drawings depicted proposed layouts on a particular plane.
Pop-Up Retail
A retail approach to supplement their ongoing retail establishments to test out the viability of selected locations, to test-market new products, or for seasonal merchandising; a temporary installation.
Postcompletion Step (postoccupancy evaluation [POE])
The final step in the design process during which the interior designer and client evaluate the end results; also called postoccupancy evaluation (POE).
Powder Room
(Half-bath) contains a toilet and sink area, with no bathing facilities.
Power and Communications Plan
A component of the contract documents package that includes telephone and electrical wiring information for computers, and electrical wiring for acoustical equipment, security, intercom systems, and so on.
Preproject Step
The first step in the design process, during which the relationship between a prospective client and the interior designer is established.
Programming Phase
The first phase of an interior design project in which, through data gathering and analysis, the designer determines the requirements that need to be met, culminating in a design concept to describe the proposed character of the space. A written program or plan of action, preliminary budget estimates, and projected time schedules are then developed.
Project Manager
A person assigned to manage the phases of an interior design project to ensure not only that a prescribed work plan is developed, but also that the project is executed according to that plan and in a timely manner.
Punch List
A list that outlines outstanding or deficient items at the final stages of installation for a project.
Reflected Ceiling Plan
A component of the contract documents package that includes all architectural elements that interface with the ceiling. it may detail the types and locations of lighting and ceiling fan fixtures; ceiling materials; sprinklers, smoke detector, and are temperature control systems; and partitions that touch the ceiling.
Retainer
A down payment or deposit for services to be rendered.
Sample Board (Materials Board)
A presentation prepared to illustrate the types of materials and furnishings being considered to carry out a design concept; also called material board.
Schedule
In the contract documents package, a document that provides supplementary notes (e.g. a recommended type of fixture and its location)
Schematic
A diagrammatic representation of the framework for a plan.
Schematic Design Phase
The second phase of an interior design project in which drawings and other documents are prepared to depict the design concept and solutions, including the formulation of ideas for space allocation, layouts for furniture and equipment, and the types of finishes to be used.
Section
A drawing that shows a vertical slice of a design the illustrates wall thickness in addition to other elements.
Shop Drawing
Drawings, diagrams, illustrations, schedules, and other documents prepared by contractors that illustrate how specific portions of the work on an interior design project will be fabricated or installed.
Sited
The manner in which a property is located or positioned (e.g. Northern or southern exposure)
Specifications
A component of the contract documents package that provides clarifying information further detailing specific recommendations, such as a manufacture's brand and model number for a product.
Stacking Diagram
A schematic drawing that may be used to represent the location from which the space is viewed.
Suite
Adjoined rooms with related functions.
Title Sheet
A cover sheet for the contract documents package, which included the name and location of the project, a list od all drawings and documents included in the package, the title block, and lines on which the client will indicate his or her approval with signature and date.
Triangle Kitchen Design
An approach to kitchen design that considers the location of the three primary workstations: sinks, refrigerator, and cooktop.
Working Drawing
The plans, schedules, and specifications developed during the contract documents phase; also known as the construction drawings.
Zone
An area of space designed to be used for a particular type of activity.
