The Great Compromise
Term: The Great Compromise was a split result between the Virginia and NJ plan.

Sig. : It gave each state one vote (Virginia part) and it would inclue 1 representitive for every 30,000 people in the state (NJ part). Settled the dispute...
3/5 Compromise
Term: This compromise stated that slaves would count as 3/5 of a person

Sig. : this relates to the populations who own slaves (mostly the south) to count the slaves in order to boost their population
Federalism
Term: The sharing of power between the national and state governments

Sig. : it gave power to both the national and state governments. Balance of nation vs. state
Separation of Powers
Term: A system of giving separate branches (executive, legislative, and judicial) powers of government

Executive- the president
Legislative- senate and house of representatives
Judicial- supreme court

Sig. : This changed the way the government worked at the time and started the idea of using checks and balances
Checks and Balances
Term: The system is when each of the three branches of government can limit the powers of the others.

Sig. : This makes sure no one branch becomes too powerful. Each branch “checks” the power of the other branches to make sure that the power is balanced between them.
Supremacy Clause
Act VI (6), Clause XI (11)

Term: It established the US Constitution, federal statues, and treaties, the "supreme law of the land"

Sig. : The Constitution or Federal Law will win in any conflict between it and any state or local law. This makes all states bound to the Constitution and federal law.
Necessary and Proper Clause
Term: Allows congress to make laws required for the exercise of its other powers established by the constitution

Sig. : It lets Congress create new laws about subjects that were not handled in the Constitution itself, thus giving more flexibility in the legislative branch.
Electoral College
Term: A group of people who count votes for the president and vice president (they ultimately vote for the state they represent)

Sig. : The president is elected through the the electoral college
Federalist vs. Anti-Federalists
Term: Federalists supported the sharing of power in a national and state government; anti-federalists opposed the ratification of the new constitution and liked the idea of the states having power
(Strong central govt. vs. state's rights)

Sig. : This caused issues between the federalists and anti federalists regarding the states vs. government
Bill of Rights
Term: The first 10 amendments in the US Constitution which granted certain rights

Sig. : This gave the people rights like the right to property, to bear arms, speech, etc.
