Protection
Function of the Integumentary system. Provides protection against abrasion and ultraviolet light.
Sensation
Function of the Integumentary system. has sensory receptors that can detect heat, cold, touch, pressure, and pain.
Temperature Regulation
Function of the Integumentary system. the amount of blood flow beneath the skin's surface and the activity of sweat glands in the skin.
Excretion
Function of the Integumentary system. Small amounts of waste products are lost through the skin and in gland secretions.
Cleavage lines
AKA or tension lines. The skin is most resistant to stretch along these lines.
Stretch Marks
Lines that are visible through the epidermis. Can develop on the abdomen and breasts of women during pregnancy.

Under the dermis. Not part of the skin, but it does connect the skin to underlying muscle or bone.
Pigmentation
Created by Melanocytes. Color of the skin
Hair
found everywhere on the skin except palms and soles etc.
Cuticle
Single layer of overlapping cells that hold the hair in the hair follicle
Cortex
a hard cortex the surrounds the softer center (Medulla)
Medulla
Soft center of hair.
Cyanosis
Decreased Oxygen
Jaundice
Liver damage that causes yellowish skin color

Allergy or infection
