4 Types of Tissue

Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, Nervous

Epithelial

This type of tissue - forms coverings, linings, glands, little or no cellular matrix, lateral surface attaches to neighbors, AVASCULAR w/out blood vessels.

Glands

Specialized secretory structure composed of epithelial cells

Unicellular

goblet cells that secrete mucus

Multicellular

endocrine glands that secrete products directly into blood

Exocrine glands

secrete products into ducts

Merocrine

only the product is secreted (no loss of cellular material)

Apocrine

Apex (tip) of cell pinches off with product

Holocrine

whole cell is shed (sebaceous gland)

Fibroblast

Product protein fibers

Adipocytes

store fat

Macrophages

are mobile white blood cells that ingest foreign material

Mast Cells

release inflammatory chemicals

Collagen fibers

straight rope like strong but flexible

Elastic Fibers

branched, wavy, can stretch and recoil

Reticular Fibers

form interwoven frameworks

GAGs

polysaccharides that hold water

GAGs link _____ to form large molecules called ______

Proteins, proteoglycans

Cartilage

is chondrocytes in lacunae

Bone

osteocytes in lacunae

Hyaline Cartilage

glassy matrix, very few visible fibers, support joint movement

Fibrocartilage

parallel collagen fibers in thick bundles, compression resistance, shock absorption, intervertebral joints.

Elastic Cartilage

web like mesh of elastic fibers, flexibility, external ear

Axon

carries outgoing signals

Dendrites

receive incoming signals

Neuroglia

supporting cells

Mucous Membranes

line passageways that open to the outside of the body

Serous Membranes

line trunk cavities (not open to the outside)

Cutaneous Membrane

the skin (type of membrane)

Synovial Membrane

lines freely moveable joints
