Board of Trade
Agency established in 1696 by the British government to improve the management of the colonies.
Committees of Correspondence
Communications network set up in 1772 to state the rights of colonists and to keep colonists informed of British activities.

Organized political interest group. The Revolutionary generation feared that factions would corrupt republican government and undermine public virtue.
public virtue
The willingness of the people to sacrifice their own self-interest for the good of the whole. The Revolutionary generation relied on this self-regulatory behavior to maintain public order in the absence of powerful government.
Regulators
Farmers from western North Carolina who, in the 1760s and 1770s, rebelled against the existing political and social power structure that was dominated by eastern planter interests.
revolutionary republicanism
Ideology that emphasized the dangers of government by arguing that only by controlling power and corruption could liberty be preserved. It was the ideology colonists used to justify their declaration of independence from Britain.
