Olive Branch Petition
An attempt to assert the colonists' rights while remaining loyal to the British crown. Was drafted by John Dickinson and was adopted by the Second Continental Congress in 1775.
Prohibitory Act
In 1775 it declared that the American trade and commerce shall be prohibited.
Common Sense
Written by Thomas Paine and published in 1776. In the pamphlet Paine wanted to encourage the colonists to focus their anger on the primary reason for their suffering, King Henry VIII
Declaration of Independence
Document drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson in 1776. Jefferson declared that the colonists had suffered enough British oppression and will start their own independent nation.

Primary author of The Declaration of Independence. Believed that all men had the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
George Mason
Attended the Philadelphia convention in behalf of Virginia in 1786. Proposed that the United States adopt the Virginia Plan which would create two houses. The lower house were men from each state depending on their population and they would elect the members of the upper house
Continental Congress
Convention of delegates from the thirteen colonies before the American revolution. In their meeting they decided how they should respond to the British oppression.
Articles of Confederation
Was the first constitution of the United States in which it described how the government should operate. It was drafted in 1776 but was ratified in 1777.
George Washington
Was an essential leader in the American Revolutionary War and served as commander in chief of the Continental Army 1775-1783.
Bunker Hill
Took place on June 17, 1775 and was faught primarily around Breed's Hill. It was a bloody battle that resulted in the victory of the British.
General Thomas Gage
Fought alongside George Washington in the French and Indian War. After the fall of Montreal in 1760 he was named its military governor. Was the commander in chief of the British force in North America.
Hessian
German soldiers hired in the eighteenth century to fight alongside the British against the American colonists.
Lord Cornwallis
Was a British commander in the South during the American Revolutionary War. On August 16, 1780 he crushed a Patriot force under Horatio Gates.
Nathanael Greene
Was a Quaker and a former blacksmith from Rhode Island. He was also a major general of the Continental Army. However once the war started Greene became a militia private which was the lowest rank.
John Adams
One of the three American diplomats that went to France to work out a treaty ending the war in 1782. They reached a final settlement of the treaty in the following year.
John Jay
One of the three American diplomats that went to France to work out a treaty ending the war in 1782. They decided to keep France out of their decison of the treaty because they feared France would keep them at war.
Treaty of Paris 1783
Signed by the British and American diplomats in 1783. The treaty ended the American Revolutionary War in which the colonists were given their recognition of independence.
Women during War time
During the war women stayed home and took care of their children and their household. Some women decided to participate in the war simply by weaving textiles making the colonists less dependant on the British goods. They also made their own tea from local plants supporting the cause.
