Boston Tea Party
the dumping of 18,000 pounds of tea into into Boston Harbor by colonists in 1773 to protest the Tea Act
The significance of Boston Tea Party showed the British that the colonists would not stand for the kinds of taxes that were putting on items. The British wanted more control in the colonies and issued the Intolerable Acts.
Intolerable Acts
a series of laws enacted by Parliament in 1774 to punish Massachusetts colonists for the Boston Tea Party.
The significance of these acts acted as a wake up call for the colonies. The colonies felt that these were very unfair and felt their rights being taken away.
Lexington and Concord
the first battle of the Revolutionary war fought in Massachusetts on April 19th 1775. The British soldiers moved to Lexington and Concord to seize the colonists military supplies and arrest revolutionaries.
The significance of this was that it was the first official battle of the Revolutionary war and sparked the start of the war.
First Continental Congress
a convention of delegates from twelve of the colonies (Georgia was not present) that met on September 5, 1774 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, early in the American Revolution. It was called in response to the Intolerable Acts.
The significance of this was that it was the first step towards our independence from Britain.
Second Continental Congress
a convention of delegates from the thirteen colonies that started meeting in the summer of 1775 in Philadelphia soon after warfare in the American Revolutionary War begun.
This is significant because they were the group that started the Declaration and set up the first government for the colonies.
Olive Branch Petition
a petition written by the Second Continental Congress on July 5th 1775 in a final attempt to avoid a war between the Thirteen Colonies and Britain.
This is significant because it showed that the colonies truly did not want to break away from Britain but we wanted to be treated fairly. Also, the response from the king would determine if we went to war or not against Britain.
Declaration of Independence
a document written by Thomas Jefferson in 1776 in which the delegates from the colonies declared the colonies independent from Britain
This is significant because it was the document that declared us independent.
Thomas Jefferson vs. John Locke
Thomas Jefferson was influenced greatly by John Locke's thoughts and ideas.
This is significant because many of Thomas Jefferson's thoughts were influenced by John Locke and put into the Declaration of Independence that would shape our country.
