Programming

The process during which information about a problem is collected, analyzed, and clearly stated to provide a basis for design...defines a problem before a solution is attempted

Name the 5 steps of the programming process

1. Establishing goals:

what the client wants to acheive and why

2. Collecting and analyzing facts:

Describing the existing conditions and requirements (ex. space adjacencies)

3. Uncovering and testing concepts:

Programmatic concepts - performance requirement related to methods of solving a problem or satisfying a need

4. Determining needs:

Balances the desires of the client against the available budget or establishes a budget based on the defined goals and needs

5. Stating the problem:

Problem statements from previous steps...leads to the design phase

Human factors

Involves the correctness of fit between objects and spaces and the needs of the people using those objects and spaces...relate to the physical, psychological, and social needs of people

Anthropometrics

The measurement of size, proportions, and range of motion of the human body; static is at rest, dynamic is while doing activities

Ergonomics

Study of the relation between human physiology and the physical environment

Human comfort is based on the quality of what 8 primary environmental factors?

Temperature - primary determinant of comfort 69-80 F, tolerable 60-85 F

Humidity - comfortable 30%-60%, tolerable 20%-70%

Air movement - increases evaporation and heart loss through convection, 50ft/min to 200ft/min

Temperature radiation to and from surrounding areas - surrounding areas should be less than 85F so body can lose heat

Air quality

Sound

Vibration

Light

What 4 ways does the human body lose heat constantly?

Convection - transfer heat through movement of fluid, gas or liquid

Evaporation - moisture changes to vapor when breathing or sweating

Radiation - transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves from one surface to a cooler one

Conduction - transfer of heat through direct contact between two objects of different temperatures

Ventilation is helpful in what ways?

Provides oxygen, removes carbon dioxide, removes odors and contaminants

Amount needed depends on space size and activities

Site Analysis

The investigation and evaluation of conditions within which the project will be completed

Documenting existing conditions including structural elements and walking through, measuring, and taking photos of space
