Neurogenic bladder

Loss of voluntary voiding control

S/S of hydronephrosis

Dull flank pain, severe stabbing pain, nausea, vomitting, dribbling, burning, difficulty urinating

Hydronephrosis treatment

Nephrostomy tube, surgery, Nephrostomy, antibiotics

Urolithiasis

Formation of urinary calculi (stones)


Develop from minerals

S/S of urolithiasis

Flank/pelvic pain, nausea, vomitting, hematuria

Urolithiasis treatment

Antibiotics, encourage fluids, surgical procedures, or lithotripsy

Renal tumors

Adenocarcinoma ' tgat develop unilaterally

S/S of renal tumors

Early signs: intermittent painless hematuria


Late signs: weight loss, dull flank pain, palpable mass in flank area, gross hematuria


Renal cysts

Cysts that form in the kidneys, cause pressure on the kidney structures and compromise function, renal failure

S/S of renal cysts

Abdominal flank pain, voiding disturbances, recurrent UTI's, Hematuria, HTN and headache

Cyst treatment

No specific, relieve pain, heat, analgesics, antibiotics, dialysis, renal transplant

Tumor of the Urinary Bladder

Most common site of cancer, range from benign to invasive carcinoma, related to smoking, exposure to chemicals

Urinary Bladder tumor

Changes in voiding patterns, common sites of metastasis are liver, bone, lungs


Treatment- remove tissue

Benign prostatic hypertrophy

Enlargement of the prostate gland, men 50+, cause unknown

S/S prostate hypertrophy

Frequent urination, difficulty starting stream, dysuria, UTI'S, hematuria, nocturia

Prostate cancer

Malignant tumor of the prostate gland, urinary obstruction. PSA level should be less than 4. Treat with radiation or surgery

Nephritis (acute glomerulonephritis)

Inflamed glomerulus, previous infection w/ strep 2-3 weeks before infection

S/S of nephritis

Morning headache, generalized edema, weight loss, fatigue, HTN, anemia, proteinuria

Renal failure

Altered kidney function, interferes with ability to filter blood, decrease in blood flow to kidney


Oliguri phase - sm amt urine


Diuretic phase


Recovery phase

Renal failure rule

Low protein diet, unless on dialysis then high protein diet
