Supine

Process of lying face upwards where palms and feet are pointed upward.

Dorsal recumbent position

Pt is lying flat on the back with knees bent and feet flat on the exam table.

Lithotomy position

Similar to dorsal recumbent position, except pts feet are placed in stirrups that are attched to the end and sides of the table

Fowlers position

Pt sits on exam table with head of table raised to a 90-degree angle.

Semi-fowlers position

Similar to the fowlers position but instead using a 45-degree angle.

Prone position

Pt is face down on stomach, head is to the side and arms are either alongside the body or crossed under the head.

Sims position

Pt is placed on left side with the right leg sharply bent upward and left leg is slightly bent.

Knee-chest position

Pt is placed in prone position then asked to pull the knees up to a kneeling position with thighs at a 90degree angle to the table and buttocks in the air.

Trendelenburg position

This position is not normally used in a physicians office except in cases of shock or low BP.

Proctologic position

Is used for proctologic exams with a sigmoidoscope
