Federal Highway Act

President Eisenhower was very supportive of internal improvements. In this Act he authorize the federal government to pay 90% the cost of trucking highways. The interstates forward to serve for commerce, defense, and convenience.

John Foster Dulles

Secretary of State during the Eisenhower administration and active supporter of aggressive foreign policy. He endorsed liberation of Eastern Europe, eradication of communism and well backed up threats to war.

Massive Retalliation

John Foster Dulles' plan to involve massive notary funding in order to use the most advanced output (troops, weapons, et cetera). It wanted the U.S. to be the "Superior War commander"

Brinkmanship

John Foster Dulles wanted to play off terror of mass nuclear destruction in order to break the Soviets. It put the US on the brink of war in order to confront and stop communism.

Geneva Accords

In agreement by France, Britain, Soviet Union, China and Viet Minh on the situation in Indochina. It was meant to grant Laos and Cambodia independence at separate Vietnam into North ( Viet Minh) and South (French ) sectors.

Sputnik

The Soviet Union's first satellite. It panicked Americans about their technological inferiority, the Sputnik crisis launched the U.S. into massive government spending for defense and domestic programs.

U-2 Crisis

An attempted meeting between Khrushchev and Eisenhower to discuss what to do with Berlin. The meeting was jeopardized when the Soviets shot down a US by plane, an incident the US couldn't cover up and accepted full responsibility for.

Brown v. Board of Education

A series of court cases that challenged laws against segregation in public schools. The Court voted that "in the field of public education the doctrine of separate but equal has no place" and moved for media integration.

Montgomery Bus Boycott

In response to the arrest of Rosa Parks, black community leaders set off to organize a massive boycott. This event propelled the civil rights movement.

Rosa Parks

An officer in the Montgomery NAACP chapter that was "tired of giving in" and refused to give up her bus seat when asked by a white male passenger. She adamantly refused and was arrested for it, sparking the civil rights movement.

Martin Luther King Jr.

A peaceful, charismatic preacher that advocated civil disobedience. He led numerous peaceful protests including is famous March on Washington as well as his "I have a dream" speech.

Southern Christian Leadership Council

A civil rights organization created by dr. King to spread the civil rights movement..

Civil Rights Act of 1957

Passed by President Eisenhower, it created the Civil Rights Commission and Civil Rights Division to protect the African Americans right to vote. It was ineffective.

Little Rock

Nine students wanted to attend a high school in Little Rock but were removed by the governor's orders and later the hysterias of a white mob. President issued one thousand federal troops to protect students but the governor shut down the school rather than allow integration.
