Deuterostomes

Clade: Deuterostomia; make up the 3rd major branch of the animal kingdom.

Include: Echinoderms- sea stars, sea urchins, sand dollars.

Chordates- the phylum that includes humans and other vertebrates (animals with a vertebral column and bony cranium).

Hemichordates

Small group of wormlike marine animals, usually classified as deuterostomes

Have a 3 part body made up of proboscis, collar, and trunk.

Shared Derived Characters

Synapomorphic characters; an apomorphy that distinguishes one clade from the rest.

Water Vascular System

A network of fluid-filled canals and chambers; derived character of echinoderms.

Endoskeleton

Internal skeleton, covered by a thin, ciliated epidermis. Consists of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) plates and spines; echinoderm

Chordates

Deuterostomes; coelomates with bilateral symmetry, a tube-within-a-tube body plan, and three well-developed germ layers.

4 characters that distinguish chordates from other animals: notochord; dorsal, tubular nerve cord; postanal tail; and endostyle.

Notochord

A dorsal, longitudinal rod composed of spongy connective tissue cells surrounded by a tough fibrous sheath; firm but flexible; plays important role in embryonic development of (chordate) vertebrates.

Dorsal, tubular nerve cordpo

A CB nerve cord in a chordate that is located dorsally rather than ventrally, is hollow rather than solid, and is single rather than double.

Postanal Tail

Appendage in chordates that extends posterior to the anus.

Endostyle

Present in some chordates; a groove in the floor of the pharynx that secretes mucus and traps food particles in the sea water passing through the pharynx.
