Are important also before bedtime, for clients with hight nutritional needs, or poor appetite.

Always document nourishment intake or refusal of meals.

Forced fluids, encourage fluids

We must encourage client with as much fluids as possible. Easier when fluids are colder, varied, and given in small amounts.

Polydipsia

Drinking excessive amount of water

Sometimes physician order fluid restrictions.

I&O

Usually people on fluid restrictions, or encouraged fluid are monitored on I&O

Visually impaired

Always ask what help is needed, they can learn to eat independently. Help by describing food on a clock, and alert them of hot food.

Dysphagia

Swallowing disorder.

Speech therapist

Consulted to determine the appropriate diet consistency for people with trouble swallowing.

Problem chewing

Sometime due to poor dental health, missing teeth, or poorly fitting dentures..

House diet

A normal diet in acute or extended care facilities.


Most frequent diet ordered.


Aka general, regular, or full diet

Select diet

Client is allowed to order next day meal within their diet limits.

Modified diet

Important for therapy on many disease. Physician and dietitian considered the disease process and clients general disease.

Therapeutic diet

Prescribed as part of treatment of more than one disease or condition

Diabetes

Regulate the amount of certain nutrients in disorder of metabolism

Under/overweight

Increase/decrease body weight by calories and fat intake

Cardiac condition

Reduce/prevent edema by controlling sodium levels.

Diverticulitis

Adding digestión by avoiding food that irritate GI tract or interfere with stomach action.

Nephritis

Helping an overburden organ regain normal function

Phenylketonuria

Eliminating a food that the body is unable to tolerate.

Colitis

Slowing overactive intestinal motility

Liquid diet

Consist of entirely liquids at room temp.


Clear- inadequate in calories, protien, nutrientes. Don't use for more than 3 days.


Full- used for long time, nutritional supplement.

Edentulous

Without teeth.

Low fiber diet

Composed of food that body can absorb completely, so little is left for feces.


Inadequate in iron, calcium, vitamins.

Bland diet

For people with ulcers, esophagitis, gastreosophageal reflux disease.


Goal of diet, is to limit food that stimulate the production of gastric acid.

Diabetic diet

Maintain blood sugar, and fat levels as near to normal as possible

Lactose restricted diet

Lactose is needed to digest sugar.

Fat controlled diet

For people with hyperlipidemia. Clients have high cholesterol, and high triglyceride.

Hyperlipidemia

Elevated blood lipids or fat

High fat diet

For children with seizure disorder. This ketogenic diet is 80-90% fat

Protein restricted diet

To treat kidney and liver disorders. Amount of protein is based on clients wieght, or by amount daily.

Calcium/phosphorus modified diet

High calcium intake is indicated for prevention & treatment of osteoporosis.

Anorexia

Los of apetite or refusal to eat

Total parental nutrition

Formulated to calculate solution needed to complete specific needs of client

Peripheral parental nutrition

Lesser concentration of same ingredients found in central vein TPN

NPO

Never more than 3 days..
