Peripheral Nervous System

Consists of nerves and supporting cells

Central Nervous System

Consists of the brain and spinal cord, processes information and creates responses that are delivere to the appropriate part of the body

Cell body

Contains the nucleus and much of the cytoplasm

Dendrites

Receive impulsives from other neurons and carry impulses to the cell body

Axons

Carry's impulses away from the cell body

Resting potential

1/20th of the voltage of a flashlight battery

Action potential

Reversal of charges from more negatively charged to more positively charged charges

Threshold

Minimum level of a stimulus that is required to cause an impulse in a neuron

Synapse

Point at which a neuron transfers an impulse to another cell

Dopamine

Associated with the brains pleasure and reward center

Somatic Nervous System

Regulates activities that are under conscious control

Reflex arc

Impulses that travel a pathway at rapid speed

Autonomic nervous system

Regulates activities that are involuntary

Cochlea

Part of the ear filled with fluid that sends impulses to the brain

Cerebrum

Part of the brain responsible for voluntary activities

Cerebral cortex

Outer layer of the cerebrum

Neuron

Cells that transport impulses throughout the human brain

Thamamus

Receives messages from sensory receptors throughout the body and then relays the information to the cerebrum for processing

Cerebellum

Second largest region, controls muscle activity and sensory information

Brain stem

Connects the brain and spinal cord

Frontal lobe

Part of the brain that controls judgment and decision making

Temporal lobe

Controls hearing and smell

Occipital lobe

Controls vision

Parietal lobe

Controls hearing and speech
