Explain excitation/ionisation

Electrons gain energy by absorbing a photon and lose energy by releasing photons.

The ground state is when the electrons are in their lowest energy state.

Excitation happens when the electrons move to a higher energy level within the atom.

Ionisation is when electrons get enough energy to leave the atom altogether.

What is an emission spectrum?

A bright spectrum seen when photons are emitted from atoms as electrons fall from a higher energy state to a lower energy state.

What is an absorption spectrum?

A spectrum of dark lines seen on a coloured background produced when a gas absorbs specific electrons which corresponds to energy transitions and leaves out all other photons that can't be absorbed.
