Cell Membrane
The selectively permeable outer boundary of a cell consisting of a pospholipid bilayer embedded with proteins; plasma membrane or cytoplasmic membrane
Organelles
A part of a cell that performs a specialized function
Isotonic
A solution with the same osmotic pressure as the solution (usually body fluids) with which it is compared
Enzyme
A protein that catalyzes a specofoc biochemical reaction
Energy
An ability to move something and thus do work
Lysosome
Organelle that contains digestive enzymes
Endocytosis
Process by which a cell membrane envelops a substance and draws it into the cell in a vesicle
Stem Cell
An undifferentiated cell that can divide to yield two daughter stem cells or a stem cell and a progentior cell
DNA
Contais deoxyribose and forms a double polynucleotide chain. The two chains are held together by hydrogen bonds.
Translation
Assembly of an amino acid chain according to the sequence of base triplets in an mRNA molecule
Coenzyme
A nonprotein organic molecule required for the activity of a particular enzyme
Selectively Permeable
A membrane that allows some molecules through but not others
Hypertonic
A solution with a greater osmotic pressure than the solution with which it is compared (usually body fluids)
Anabolism
Synthesis of larger molecules from smaller ones
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Organelle composed of a system of connected membranous tubules and vesicles along with protein is synthesized
Exocytosis
Transport of substances out of a cell in membrane bounded vesicles
Interphase
Period between two cell division when a cell metabolizes and prepares to divide
Genes
Portion of a DNA molecule that encodes information to synthesize a protein; a control sequence ; or tRNA or rRNA; the unit of inheritance
Codon
Set of three nucleotides of a messenger RNA molecule corresponding to a particular amino acid
Hypotonic
A solution with a lower osmotic pressure than the solution with which it is compared
Catabolism
Breakdown of large molecules into smaller ones
Nucleus
A cellular organelle enclosed by a double layered, pourous membrane and containing DNA
Golgi Apparatus
An organelle that prepares cellular products for secretion
Nucleolus
A small structure within the cell nucleus that conatins RNA and proteins
