What is a stroke
(Define it)
An abrupt impairment of brain function resulting in a set of neurologic signs and symptoms that are caused by impaired blood flow to the brain and last more than 24 hours.

-Pathophysiology
*HEMORRHAGIC STROKE:
-Blood vessel in brain ruptures, bleeding into brain occurs.

*EMBOLIC STROKE:
-Obstruction of blood vessel by plaque, blood clot, or both, or by debris released into the vessel that impedes blood flow to an area of the brain.

Signs and Symptoms
*HEMORRHAGIC STROKE
-Occurs suddenly
-May include severe headache described as "the worst headache of my life."
-Stiff neck, loss of consciousness, vomiting and seizures.


*EMOLIC STROKE
-Appears without warning
-One or more of the following signs or symptoms:
one-sided weakness, numbness, confusion and memory lapses, headache, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), and language problems.

COMPLICATIONS
-Constipation, dehydration, contractures, UTI, pressure ulcers, pneumonia and thrombophlebitis-swelling (inflammation) of a vein caused by a blood clot.

-Sensory losses put patient at risk for traumatic and thermal injuries

- Swallowing difficulties place patient at risk for pulmonary complications, such as choking and aspiration pneumonia (Pneumonia is a breathing condition in which there is swelling or an infection of the lungs or large airways. Aspiration pneumonia occurs when food, saliva, liquids, or vomit is breathed into the lungs or airways leading to the lungs.
