How do most animals reproduce?’

Most animals are diploid and produce haploid gametes through meiosis to reproduce sexually.

What is parthenogenesis? Examples?

In some animals males can be haploid because they develop from unfertilized eggs. When this occurs it’s called parthenogenesis.(bees, wasps, ants)

How else can some animals reproduce asexually? Examples?

Some animals do use asexual reproduction though at times such as flat worms, round worms, the “jelly fish” group, sea stars, sea anemones, some insects and reptiles through budding or fragmentation.

How many animals are currently known to scientists?

We know of about 1,000,000.

How many different species are there actually thought to be?

Anywhere between 3-30 million species.

What things do ALL animals have in common?

They are all eukaryotic. (Heterotrophic) They have to consume all food. They are all multicellular.

What things do MOST animals have in common?

Most are: composed of several complex types of tissues(muscle, nerve, etc) motile during some stage of life reproduce sexually have a fixed body plan

What is unique about the tissues found in animals?

animal cells DON’T have a cell wall. They have unique ways of communicating called gap junctionsThey have unique tissues that aren’t found in fungi or plants that allow for coordinated movement (nervous and muscular) They also have special connective tissues that make things like blood and bone. (it has an extracellular matrix that holds the cells)Epithelial tissues cover their bodies and line digestive tracts

What 2 phyla can the animal kingdom be divided into and what does each mean?

The animal kingdom is divided into 2 groups:Parazoa- animals that lack specialized tissues (ex. sponges)Eumetazoa- animals that have specialized tissues (all others)

What is the cell called when egg and sperm fuse?

A Zygote
