Rub blunt end of an Ayre spatula over veginal wall under and lateral to cervix
If mucosa is dry, moisten sterile swab with normal saline solution |

Cervical Scrape
|
Insert bifid end of Ayre spatula into vegina with more pointed bump into cervical os. Rotate all the way.
This scrapes surface of squamocolumnar junction and cervix. Specimen important for adolescent chose endocervical cells haven't yet migrated into endocervical canal |

Endocervical Specimen

Insert cytobrush into the os. Rotate 720 degrees in one direction
Cytobrush gives higher yield of endocervical cells at squamocolumnar junction |

Herpes Simplex Virus (Type 2)

Episodes of local pain, dysuria, fever
Clusters of small, shallow vesicles with surrounding erythema. Erupt on genital areas and thighs. Inguinal adenopathy, edema, vesicles on labia rupture in 1-3 days leaving painful ulcers. Remains dormant indefinitely. Initial infxn lasts 7- to 10 days and recurrent infections last 3-10 days |
