antianxiety and antipanic agents
drugs lessen anxiety, tension, and agitation, especially when they are associaed with panic attacks. Examples are: benzodiazepines (BZDs); selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
antidepressants
drugs gradually reverse depressive symptoms and produce feelings of well-being. The basis of depression is thought to be an imbalance in the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain.
SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)
such as fluoxetine (Prozac). They improve mood, mental alertness, physical activity, and sleep patterns.
Monamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors
These drugs suppress an enzyme, monoamine oxidase, that normally degrades neurotransmitters. MAO inhibitors are not as widely prescribed as other antidepressants because serious cardiocascular and liver complications can occur with their use.
Tricylic antidepressants
These drugs contain three fused rings (tricyclic) in their chemical structure. They block the reuptake of neurotransmitters at nerve endings.
Atypical antidepressants
These are antidepressants that do not fit in the previous categories.
anti-obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) agents.
These drugs are prescribed to relieve the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Tricyclic antidepressants and SSRIs are examples of these agents.
antipsychotics (neuroleptics)
These drugs modify psychotic symptoms and behavior. Atypical antipsychotics are the major examples. Used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and othe mental illness.
hypnotics
these drugs are used to produce sleep and relieve insomnia. Examples are sedatives and benzodiazepines.
mood stabilizers
these drugs are used primarily to treat patients with maniapredominant form of bipolar disease. Examples are: Lithium and anticonvulsant drugs.
stimulants
these drugs (amphetamines) are prescribed for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. Common symptoms of ADHD are having a short attention span and being easily distracted, emotionally unstable, impulsive, and moderately to severly hyperactive.
