Isolationism
Foreign policy of having little or nothing to do with other countries.
Imperialism
Policy of when a powerful, stronger nation seeks to take control of the economic and political affairs of weaker nations or a region. Often results in colonies. Examples- Europe in Africa; U.S. and Philippines
Manifest Destiny
The idea of expanding the US borders from "sea to shining sea," or from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific.
Sphere of Influence
An area, usually around a seaport, where a nation had special trading privileges and laws to protect their citizens. Example: China
Open Door Policy
1899- Policy proposed by U.S. to allow any nation (Europe, Japan, U.S.) to be allowed to trade in any other nation's sphere of influence in China.
Social Darwinism
Survival of the Fittest.
The idea that said that businesses that drove out other businesses were "fittest" and should deserve to survive.
"White Man's Burden"
The natural duty of white people to control other, non-white peoples.
Japan
Open trade after an isolation of 200 years when Perry came with armored ship and letter from Fillmore.
Hawaii
Wealthy American Plantation owners overthrow the Queen in 1893 with the help of U.S. marines. U.S. annexed Hawaii in 1898.
Alaska
Purchased from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million. Annexed in 1959.
Seward's Folly
The purchase of Alaska was thought to be a big mistake by William H. Seward. However, the territory was rich in resources like gold, copper, and oil.
