Acetylcholine

Memory, arousal, and muscle contractions. Black widow spider bite releases too much of this and causes convulsions

Dopamine

Controls movement and sensations of pleasure. If too little is released, parkinson's disease

Serotonin

Sleep, mood, anxiety, and appetite. Low levels linked to depression.

Glutamate

Learning, memory formation, synaptic plasticity. Excess results in neuronal damage, head injury, alzheimers and huntington disease

Gamma-aminobutyric acid

produces inhibition in the brain. Calms anxitety.

Agonist

chemical substance that enhances the effects of a neurotransmitter

Antagonist

chemical substance that blocks or reduces the effects of a nerotransmitter

ex. antagonist

a dart that blocks acetylcholine causing paralyzation

ex. agonist

endorphins

controls pain. athletes may injure themselves and not feel it yet.

Reuptake

neurotransmitter suction. sucking the chemicals back into the synaptic vesicles

Afferent (sensory) neuron (Access to spinal cord)

Pain from candle stimulates this which carries message up to interneurons

Efferent (motor) neuron (Exit the spinal cord)

The interneurons send a message out causing the hand to jerk away from candle

Sensory pathway, Voluntary. Skeletal muscles. walking. raising their hand, lifting a flower

Autonomic nervous system

involuntary muscles. organs, glands. sympathetic/parasympathetic.

sympathetic division

fight or flight. stressful situations. bear attack. pupils get bigger

parasympathetic division

eat drink and rest. return to normal functioning after stressful situation ends. slows breathing, constricts pupils. this is why people get hungry AFTER stress is over
