who stated that the earth revolves around the sun
nicholas copernicus
define friction
force that acts to resist the relative motion or attempted motion of the objects to materials that have in contact
what were 2 classes of motion that Aristotle spoke of?
natural motion, and violent
define the 2nd motion
natural motion- proceeds from nature every object has a proper place
law of Inertia
property that every material has, inertia resists change in an objects state of motion.
force
a push or a pull
when does friction act
opposite of the objects motion
what does the law inertia apply to
( everything)
both moving and non- moving objects
how does mass relate inertia
more mass = more inertia
describe newton's 1st law, include the relationship between the earth moving and objects on it seemingly stand still
the moving earth
what is the force that explains why a book on a table stays still?
equlibrium and gravity
if a 10g objects is still on a table, how much force does the table exert to keep it still
10ng
when does equilibrium occur
when all of the forces acting on an object are balanced the net force on the object is zero the sum of the upward force equals the sum of the downward force
what is the net force of a 10N force in the same direction of a 20 N force
30 N
define a vector quantity
arrow whose length represents the magnitude of a quantity and whose direction represents the direction of the quantity.
study diagram
net force- you will need to fill in the values and diagram
why is a force needed to change an object's state of motion
accoording to newtons first law a body remains in constant motion in the same direction with the same velocity unless and until an external forces acts on it. so when a body of motion comes under the influence an external force it either 1 changes in directions in its speed- accelerate or 2 changes in direction of motion - like when rolling marbles collide with each other and change direction 3 both of the above changes take place and when a body is in the state of resist will remain in rest and until acted upon by an external force in the " ( bod)"at rest will stay at rest and a body moving at a constant velocity in a straight line continues doing so indefinitely
the equilibrium rule, including static and dynamic equilibrium
whenever the net force on an object is zero the object is in mechanical equilibrium- this is know as the equilibrium rule, state of no change. dynamic equilibrium- when an object moves at a steady pace in a straight line. static equilibrium a state of rest
Aristotle's beliefs discoveries
Aristotle's 2 types of motion all objects have their place or strive to get there all motion due to sustained push or pull- earth does not move
describe Copernicus beliefs discoveries
Copernicus- assumed that earth and other planets move around the sun
Describe Galileo's beliefs/ discoveries
in the absence of opposing forces a moving object will continue to move indefinitely how concept of inertia discredited the Aristotelian theory of motion.
