What does a chemical reaction involve (in terms of the atoms)?

Chemical reaction change only the way that the atoms are combined in compounds. The atoms themselves are unchanged.

What is the structure of atom?

P+ and N are packed together in the nucleus while E- move in the large surrounding volume.

What are atomic number(Z)?

- The # of P+ in an atom.

-The # of P+ determines the identity of the elements.

- Periodic table is arranged in order of atomic #'s.

EX: H z=1 1 proton

What is mass number (A)?

- Total # of P+ & N in an atom.

- The # of N can vary.

What are isotopes?

- Atoms of the same elements that have different # N. (same # of P+)

Define period.

One of the 7 horizontal rows of elements in the periodic table.

Define group.

One of the 18 vertical columns of elements in the periodic table.

Define main-group elements.

An element on one of the two groups on the left or the six groups on the right of the periodic table.

Define transition metals.

An element in one of the 10 smaller groups near the middle of the periodic table.

Define inner transition metals.

An element in one of the 14 groups shown separately at the bottom of the periodic table.

Example of period.

First period contains 2 elements: hydrogen & helium.

Example of group.
