What are trace elements?
elements that are essential to your body but only in minute quantities (Ca, P, K, S, Na, Cl, Mg)
What is the structure of an atom?
protons, neutrons, and electrons
What is an isotope?
atoms of an element that differ in mass number due to the number of neutrons.
What is a radioactive isotope?
one in which the nucleus decays spontaneously giving off particles and energy. easy to trace.
What are nonpolar covalent bonds?
bonds in the molecule have equal pull on each other
What are polar covalent bonds?
bonds pull in a way so that the molecule is partially positively charged and partially negatively charged.
What is an ionic bond?
Two ions with opposite charges attract each other
What is a hydrogen bond?
weak bonds consisting of a partially positive charge that attracts to a partially negative charge.
What are water's life supporting properties?
cohesion, adhesion, surface tension
What is cohesion?
the tendency of molecule of the same kind to stick together
What is adhesion?
the clinging of one substance to another. (in plant veins)
What is surface tension?
the measure of how difficult it is to stretch or break liquid
Why is ice less dense than water?
The ice molecules are further apart.
What is evaporative cooling?
when a substance evaporates, the surface of the liquid that remains behind cools down.
What is a solution?
a liquid consisting of a uniform mixture of two or more substances
What is a solvent?
the dissolving agent (water)
What is a solute?
the substance that is dissolved (salt)
What is an acid?
a compound that donates hydrogen ions to solutions
What is a base?
a compound that accepts hydrogen ions
Describe the pH scale.
7 is neutral, pure water
<7 is acidic >7 is basic |
