antigenic drift

Minor antigenic changes in the influenza A virus due to mutations in the spikes’ genes.

antigenic shift

Major changes in the influenza A virus due to recombination of viral strains from two different host species.

caseous lesion

Lesion typical of tuberculosis which is necrotic area of lung tubercle superficially resembling cheese.

catarrhal

A term referring to the secretion of mucus or fluids; also a term describing first stage of pertussis.

convalescent phase

Stage of a disease characterized by absence of symptoms and clearing of pathogens.

erythrogenic toxin

An exotoxin produced by lysogenized group A strains of β-hemolytic streptococci that is responsible for the severe fever and rash of scarlet fever in the nonimmune individual. Also called a pyrogenic toxin.

extrapulmonary tuberculosis

A condition in which tuberculosis bacilli have spread to organs other than the lungs.

induration

Area of hardened, reddened tissue associated with the tuberculin test.

Mantoux test

An intradermal screening test for tuberculin hypersensitivity. A red, firm patch of skin at the injection site greater than 10 mm in diameter after 48 hours is a positive result that indicates current or prior exposure to the TB bacillus.

MDR-TB

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis.

nephritis

Inflammation of the kidney.

paroxysmal

Events characterized by sharp spasms or convulsions; sudden onset of a symptom such as fever and chills.

pneumonia

An inflammation of the lung leading to accumulation of fluid and respiratory compromise.

streptolysin

A hemolysin produced by streptococci.

tubercle

In tuberculosis, the granulomatous well-defined lung lesion that can serve as a focus for latent infection.

tuberculin reaction

A diagnostic test in which PPD, or purified protein derivative (of M. tuberculosis ), is injected superficially under the skin and the area of reaction measured; also called the Mantoux test.

XDR-TB

Extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (worse than multidrug-resistant tuberculosis).
