Identify the major components of the cardiovascular system
Blood
Heart
Blood Vessels
Major function of the blood
Transportation

Regulation

Protection
Describe the physical characteristics of blood, including pH,viscosity,volume,color changes.
pH=slightly alkaline ranges from 7.35-7.45
Viscosity=thicker than water
Volume=5-6 liters male,4-5 liters female
Color changes= bright red- high oxygen
dark red-low oxygen
Temp=100.4F=38C
Distinguish between blood plasma and formed elements
Blood Plasma=55% of blood
Formed elements=45% of blood
Major components of blood plasma
91.5% of plasma is mostly water
8.5% of plasma is solutes (electrolytes,nutrients,wastes,etc.)
Plasma proteins
-Albumins-maintain osmotic pressure
-Globulins-produce antibodies
-Fibrinogen-used for blood-clotting
Formed elements of the blood
Erythrocytes=Whole Red blood cells
Leukocytes=Whole White blood cells
Thrombocytes= Platelets pieces of cells
Define Hemopoiesis
Pluripotent stem cells
Myeloid stem cells
Lymphoid cells
Hemopoiesis-formation of blood cells
Pluripotent stem cells -
--1st unspecialized cells
--can develop into all types of blood cells
Myeloid Stem cells
--Begin and Finish development in red bone marrow
--give rise to RBC's, platelets,monocytes,neutrophils
Lymphoid stem cells
--development in red bone marrow
--finish development in lymphatic tissue
--give rise to lymphocytes
Describe the anatomy of erythrocytes
No Nucleus or other organelles
-cannot divide
-no mitochondria
-cytosol filled with hemoglobin
Plasma membrane strong and flexible
Biconcave
Describe the function of erythrocytes ,including the structure and role of hemoglobin
Erythrocytes function is to carry oxygen to all the tissues from the lungs.
Structure of hemoglobin
1.globin=protein portion made of 4 polypeptide chains
-2 alpha chains
-2 beta chains
2.Heme=non protein pigment attached to each chain
-each hemoglobin can carry 4oxygen atoms
-iron atom at center of each heme group

Function of hemoglobin
1.transports oxygen through the bloodstream
2.also transports carbon dioxide
Life cycle of red blood cells
1.eaten by macrophage in spleen or liver
2.broken apart into globin and heme
3.globin portion broken down into individual amino acids then recycled
